Upon completion of this course, the learner will: understand the etiology and epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), risk factors and pathophysiology, emerging research, and treatments of this disease. This course will assist nurses in all areas of practice and levels of care to develop timely, accurate care plans and to differentiate between DM and other conditions.

    5. MODY Metabolic Syndrome 
  4. Differential Diagnosis of DM 
    1. Cushing Disease Cushing Syndrome 
    2. Corticosteroid-induced hyperglycemia (steroid-induced diabetes) 
    3. Neuroleptic induced hyperglycemia 
    4. Infection (stress-induced hyperglycemia) 
    5. Pheochromocytoma 
    6. Iron overload (hemochromatosis)

  7. Verbalize lifestyle behaviors (behavioral modifications) to improve glucose management. 
  8. Discuss medical conditions that mimic diabetes mellitus: presenting signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, and treatment options.  
  9. Verbalize understanding of the importance of annual/preventive screenings for diabetes.
