Course Overview

ERAS in Orthopedic Surgeries

Author: Joanna Grayson, BSN, RN

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a protocol that promotes fast recovery in post-surgical clients by reducing the client’s surgical stress, risk for complications, and long-term impairment by utilizing a multimodal, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based system that focuses on optimizing client outcomes. The system was developed by a Danish surgeon, Henrik Kehlet, during a colorectal surgery, but the protocol is applied to numerous specialties today, including orthopedics. ERAS in orthopedic surgery can reduce postoperative complications and hospital stays, which can reduce costs. Clients can experience accelerated recovery times, which lead to improved client outcomes. These benefits make it important for nurses caring for surgical clients in the preoperative, interoperative, and postoperative periods to understand their role in the ERAS pathway.
