Course Overview
Author: Joanna Grayson, BSN, RN
Kaposi sarcoma is a soft tissue tumor caused by human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) that primarily affects clients diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), or those undergoing organ transplantation. The disease was first described by a Hungarian dermatologist, Moritz Kaposi of the University of Vienna, in 1872 when he assessed pigmented cutaneous sarcoma in the lower extremities of a client.
This chronic condition is marked by periods of relapse that require sustained systemic treatments that can lead to increased risk of toxicities, poor tolerability, and decreased quality of life. Even though the disease occurs in a small percentage of the population, it can cause disfigurement of the skin and death in clients, making it important for all nurses to be familiar with the condition.
