1. What are the 2025 CE requirements for renewal?

RNs must complete 12 hours of CEUs.

2. Which nurses are required to obtain CEUs to renew their license?

LPNs renew their nurse licenses annually. However, they only need to report continuing education units every other renewal or every two years. The 2025 West Virginia nursing license renewal deadline for LPNs is June 30, 2025.

RNs renew on a two-year cycle as of August 2022 and their licenses are due for renewal in even-numbered years. They’re required to complete CE for the 2026 West Virginia nursing license renewal period with an Oct. 31, 2026, deadline.

APRNs also have an Oct. 31, 2026, renewal deadline.

3. Do I need to take a test to complete the 2025 West Virginia nursing license renewal requirements?

No. 

4. Do I need to submit my CEUs through CE Broker?

RNs must submit their continuing education through CE Broker for the West Virginia nursing license renewal. Nursing CE Central automatically and instantaneously reports all completed certificates to them.

Nurses who use a different CEU provider may need to submit their credits to CE Broker manually.

6. How long do I need to keep documentation proving I completed my continuing education?

The West Virginia LPN Board recommends keeping these records for a minimum of four years in the event they are selected for an audit. 

The West Virginia RN Board of Nursing recommends keeping these records for a minimum of two years in the event they are selected for an audit.

7. When is the 2025 West Virginia nursing license renewal deadline?

LPNs must renew by June 30, 2025. RNs and APRNs must renew by Oct. 31st, 2026.  

8. What happens if I don’t renew my license before the deadline?

If you don’t renew your nursing license on time, it will lapse, and you won’t be able to practice nursing. If you practice with a lapsed/expired license, you may be subject to penalty fees. 

9. How do I renew my license in West Virginia?

Most RNs will need fulfilled CE requirements and to submit proof of completion through CE Broker. A valid method of payment will be needed to complete your renewal through theWest Virginia Board of Registered Nurses Nurse portal.

Most LPNs will only need fulfilled CE requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their renewal through the nurse portal. 

10. How can nurses check that their renewal applications are complete?

LPNs can check the status of their renewal application through the license lookup portal of the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses.

RNs can check the status of their renewal application through the license verification portal of the West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses.
