The 2024 Louisiana nursing license renewal requirements exist for good reason. Our nurses must keep up as best practices evolve, so they are empowered to provide the highest level of care for their patients.Â
However, we know you are facing burnout, staffing shortages and the high demands of a complex healthcare system. Nursing CE Central offers quick, effective courses that earn Louisiana nursing CEUs.Â
You have until the end of Dec. 31, 2024, to renew a nurse license with the state of Louisiana without incurring an additional $50 late fee.
1. What are the CE Requirements for the 2024 Louisiana Nursing License Renewal?
The Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners does not require continuing education for LPNs at this time. However, RNs must meet continuing education competency requirements to renew their license. While multiple options available to meet this requirement, most nurses choose to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education from an ANCC- and BOPN-approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central).
Nursing CE Central’s Lousiana Renewal Bundle includes LPN license renewal CE and RN license renewal CE.
APRNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of general continuing education every two years. APRNs who are nationally board certified meet the provisions for RN renewal by holding an approved certification.
APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education in pharmacotherapeutics in their advanced nursing role and population foci.
Nursing CE Central’s Louisiana APRN Bundle includes APRN license renewal CE.
2. Do I need to take a test to fulfill the CE requirements?
No.
3. Do I need to submit my CE through CE Broker?
No, you don’t need to report your CE through CE Broker and are not required to submit CE certificates at the time of renewal. However, you must complete all CE by the nurse license renewal grace period ending on Jan. 31, 2025.
The board requires that you maintain a copy of all completed CE certificates for a minimum of five years in case of an audit.
4. When is the license renewal deadline?
Louisiana RNs have until Dec. 31, 2024, to renew without incurring a $50 late fee.
However, a there’s a grace period that ends on Jan. 31, 2025. Nursing licenses must be renewed by that date before a license reinstatement is required.
5. What happens if I don’t renew my license by the end of the grace period?
The Louisiana BON will change your license status to expired. Those with an expired status won’t be allowed to practice until their license is reinstated.
6. How can I get my license reinstated if I didn’t renew it within the grace period?
You will need to submit a license reinstatement application to the state BON. Licensure applications must be completed online through Louisiana’s Nurse Portal and require you to submit proof of completed CE. You also are subjec to additional fees when applying for reinstatement.
7. How do I renew my license?
You must complete the CE requirements and fill out the online nursing licensure renewal application. A valid payment method will be needed.
8. How can I verify my Louisiana nursing license renewal application is complete?
You should receive a confirmation message through your Nurse Portal Account after you have successfully submitted the application. The LSBN licensure verification and the Nursys.com website will reflect updated licensure status within 24-48 hours of application submission.
9. What’s the main reason Louisiana RNs have an unsuccessful CE or nursing practice audit?Â
Failure to complete and maintain proof of CEs that have been accredited by the ANCC or approved by a state board of nursing is the most common reason RNs have not successfully completed an audit when renewing based on the CE contact hours requirement, according to the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
Nursing CE Central is an ANCC and LSBN-approved provider. We also maintain copies of your completed certificates for a minimum of five years.
10. How can I save money on state-imposed renewal fees?
While the deadline for the Louisiana nursing license renewal is Jan. 31, 2025, if you file after Dec. 31, 2024, you’ll incur a $50 late fee in addition to the standard renewal fee. You can save money by completing the CE requirements and license renewal application before Dec. 31, 2024.
